Creating art is central to my being. I paint in oils with my highest concentration on the human figure, but also painting large floral compositions and bold abstract paintings. I further explore the figure in art in drawing with charcoal, pastel and ink compositions and large charcoal portraits.
I paint and draw the figure from the live model which is an ever changing image and a complicated one. The use of the photograph is only employed when I need to have information when the model is not present. Other than that, the model provides more information for me as I pursue the development of a painting.
Drawing from the nude model is also important to me and I spend a minimum of five hours per week in sessions observing, studying and drawing. This challenge provides a solid basis for me in all my painting and drawing processes. I feel drawing is so basic for me that I have a great need to do so. I see, study, analyze, interpret and then I can express myself freely in any medium.
The challenge of using the human figure as a subject is great for me for there is continual learning taking place as I draw or paint compositions. The elements of design - color, line, shape, patterns, light, value, emphasis and movement are constantly kept in mind while trying to free the mind from too much control and greater creativity. It is an on-going discipline of the creative mind. Finding new avenues to explore is stimulating and meaningful when developing new canvases that speak to me, and finding the right model to paint is crucial to having a successful painting.
